Equal to, if not better than the first. Have read all 3 and find they kept my interest going throughout. A huge, intelligent, flesh eating, cannibalistic cockroach is certainly a novel idea, but the way they multiply and run over the planet is believable. If you've ever been unlucky enough to have just one come home with you from a box store, you know that they can turn into dozens before you even know they came for the ride. Immediate professional help is imperative. The characters in the story are also right out of our society. The new president who wants to please everyone by dropping all the previous president's projects, and refuses to believe there is a threat to mankind, the greedy scientist who overlooks the research and danger and steals the grain and sells it all over the world for millions, the corporate owner who wants to control world discoveries for power and money, and the lack of any control or power by the common man can all be seen in our world today. The fact that so many of the characters couldn't get really angry without dropping the "F" bomb was off-putting to me. But there is thankfully no sex, graphic or otherwise, to make me uncomfortable. The heroes do seem magically at times, to escape situations that seem impossible to get out of, while other key personnel are dying and sacrificing themselves to keep them alive.
The duplicity of the enemy (I guess is in the last book) is certainly characteristic of many powerful leaders in the world today.
I don't pretend to be someone who knows all the ins and outs of plots, grammar, character development, etc. I have read SciFy
for over 40 years and can say that this is one I totally enjoyed.

Bitter Harvest Harvest Trilogy Book 2 edition by Michael R Hicks Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I am amazed at the 90+ percent of 4 and 5 star reviews for this book. I found this book and the first one to be overly violent, and not believable, even for a sci-fi novel. Also, the author gets so tangled up in the Harvester creatures that he appears to forget about the initial reason for writing this trilogy which was the whole huge GMO issue. While he spends some time in the first book on this, he does not exploit this vast subject matter like he could have. He has hints to the "Monsanto" like companies that are using technology to create a biological weapon, but the whole GMO issue pretty much gets shelved by the end of book one, devolving into the "humans fighting the monsters" for the next 800 pages... Boring, repetitive, violent and dumb.
I have read all of Michael R. Hick's books and I have loved them all. This one is by far the best. I just couldn't stop reading it. Michael's imagination has developed a terrifying plot and threat to the end of mankind and perhaps all life on the earth. We know somewhat who the enemy is but we do not know much else. Only a few humans have any real knowledge of the terrible threat that we face and there are literally only months to react and perhaps save mankind. If it is possible....
This book is non-stop action and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. I was getting bleary eyed as I could not put down the book and stop reading. This is an excellent storyline and you will feel involved with the characters and the challenges they face. If you like fast paced action and terror in a Sci-Fi book then this a series you have to read. Read "Season Of The Harvest" as it is free now and it is the opening book of the saga. The first book was good but this book, "Bitter Harvest", is spectacular.
Michael R. Hicks has become one of my favorite authors and I am addicted to his stories. Michael I expect you to work night and day and I want the next book now! Keep up the good work!
I thoroughly enjoyed both the first book and this one. However it was really annoying that when I finished this book, the third one wasn't available yet. Especially since Bitter Harvest kind of leaves you hanging and chomping at the bit to find out what happens next. It's well written and I'm enjoying everything I've read of Hicks enormously - but it would be kind of helpful if somehow a reader were warned when starting a series that all the components aren't available yet. I would far rather have waited until I could get the whole series before starting. This has happened to me with other authors as well and perhaps it's something could look at for readers who prefer to start only completed series. Innevitably what happens in these instances is that as a reader I move on and when the next book finally does get released I rarely (if ever) go back and buy it because by then the anticipation and interest from a barely remembered bygone plot just isn't there any more. Thus a guaranteed sale for the author turns into a really unlikely one.
That having been said, I think Hicks is a dynamite author and I will hungrily continue to devour anything he releases. I have not read anything of his I haven't enjoyed immensely. This would have been worth at least an extra star if the next book were available for me to carry on.
I strongly recommend you read the 3 books in sequence. You'll get the back story straight, and the cast of characters, but mostly it's a damn gripping story, complete in each separate book. Then this one, which amps up the enemy and the struggle, the terror and the feeling of being overwhelmed. Just getting ready to read the third one, which better pay off, and not just end with a contrived climax.
So far, the writer has done a bang up job of story telling, and he actually must have a good editor. I found almost no misspellings, poor sentence structure, or the general feeling of something thrown together in a rush, which is what I discover all too often in these ebooks. If you like sci fi, or even massive adventure, I recommend the series without reservation.
